Know What Your Book Actually Costs To Publish
Most first-time authors underestimate the real cost of publishing a book — sometimes by half. Editing, design, ISBN, printing, marketing, launch costs, and the small line items in between all add up. Without a budget, money decisions get made under pressure, and the most expensive decision is usually the one to skip something that mattered.
A realistic SA self-publishing budget covers six categories:
Editing. Developmental, line, copy, and proofread. The biggest single line item for most authors. Skipping any of the four usually shows in the finished book.
Design. Cover, interior layout, ebook conversion. Done well, these are an investment; done badly, they undermine everything else.
Production. Printing — short run, print-on-demand, or offset — plus ISBN registration (free in SA) and barcode if needed.
Distribution. Postage, packaging, courier costs, return logistics, any wholesaler fees.
Marketing. Launch event, online ads, ARC copies, review copies, promotional materials.
Contingency. Ten to fifteen per cent of total budget for what you didn’t see coming. You will need it.
Knowing the numbers in advance changes how decisions get made. Authors with a budget make calmer, more strategic choices — they invest where it counts and trim where it doesn’t. Authors without a budget tend to either overspend on optics or underspend on essentials, and both errors show up in the finished product.
The budget itself doesn’t need to be elaborate. A simple spreadsheet, with realistic SA pricing in each line, takes one sitting to build and saves real money over the project.
