What to pack for a book signing

Book signings are thrilling events that offer authors the chance to connect with readers, promote their work, and enjoy the fruits of their creative labour. To ensure your book signing is a success, being well-prepared is crucial.

It’s good practice to keep a ‘book signing kit’ on hand to grab and go as needed. Here’s what I carry with me to book signings. This detailed guide may be just what you need for your next book signing event.

1. Books

This might seem obvious, but the first thing you should pack is your books! Bring more copies than you think you’ll need, as it’s better to have extras than to run out. If you have multiple titles, make sure to have a selection available. Also, consider packing books in boxes or containers that are easy to carry.

If you have multiple titles available, consider offering a book set. Prepack a set for display, and perhaps offer a little freebie or gift with it, or offer it at a discounted price.

2. Signing Supplies

  • Pens: Invest in a good-quality pen for signing books. Consider using gel or permanent pens in different colours for variety and personal touch.
  • Bookmarks and Inserts: Have bookmarks, business cards, or inserts with information about your other works or upcoming releases. These can serve as great marketing tools.

3. Promotional Materials

  • Posters and Banners: A banner with your book cover and author photo can attract attention. Make sure it includes your name and the book title.
  • Flyers and Brochures: Prepare flyers or brochures that provide more information about you and your books. This is a great way to engage potential readers who may not purchase immediately.

4. Display Items

  • Book Stands: Use stands to display your books upright on the table. This makes your table more inviting and helps potential readers see your book covers easily.
  • Tablecloth: Bring a tablecloth that complements your book’s theme or colours. It will make your table look more professional and visually appealing. Make sure your table cloth is long enough to cover up the under-table area where your unsightly boxes are, no doubt, being stored.

5. Giveaways and Merchandise

  • Freebies: Consider bringing some small giveaways like badges, stickers, or magnets with your book logo or cover. This can create goodwill and memorable experiences for your attendees.
  • Merchandise: If you have branded merchandise like mugs, t-shirts, or tote bags, bring a few along to sell or give away as part of a promotion.

6. Logistics and Payment

  • Cash Box and Change: Bring a cash box with enough change if you plan to sell books directly.
  • Card Reader: In today’s cashless society, having a portable card reader is essential for those who prefer to pay by card.
  • Price List: Have a clearly visible price list for your books and any merchandise.

7. Comfort and Essentials

  • Snacks and Water: Signings can be long, so pack some water and snacks to keep your energy up. Choose non-messy snacks that are easy to eat quickly.
  • Comfort Items: Bring items like a cushion or back support for comfort during long hours. Also, consider packing an extra layer of clothing or a jacket, depending on the venue’s climate.

8. Guest Book or Mailing List

  • Guest Book: Encourage attendees to sign a guest book or mailing list. This helps build a reader community and allows you to notify them about future events or book releases.

9. Extra Tips

  • Plan Ahead: Check with the event organisers about the venue’s setup and facilities. Knowing the space available can help you plan your layout.
  • Engage with Attendees: Have an elevator pitch ready about your book and practise friendly engagement with attendees.

By packing these essentials, you’ll be well-prepared for a successful book signing event. Not only will you create a professional appearance, but you’ll also ensure a memorable experience for your readers. Happy signing!
