The Lonely Pen

Writing is a solitary journey, a dance with words that often takes writers to places of vulnerability and creativity. However, many writers find themselves navigating this journey without the support of their loved ones. It’s an unfortunate reality that, despite the artistic pursuit, lack of encouragement too often casts a shadow on the creative process.

Writing is an intimate endeavour that requires solitude and mental space. However, the absence of understanding and support can lead to feelings of isolation. When relatives overlook the importance of a writer’s creative journey and go to the extent of criticising the time invested in their pursuits, it can leave writers longing for recognition and understanding. In a world where technology facilitates productivity, connectivity, and creativity, it’s time to challenge the stigma surrounding those who harness the power of their devices for work. Gone are the days when productivity was solely measured by the presence of paperwork on a desk or the clatter of typewriters.

It’s worth noting, however, that at the core of the writers’ disconnect lies a broader societal issue – the pervasive need for others to dictate the paths we should take. In a world where individuality should be celebrated, the constant pressure to conform and seek validation from external sources hinders personal growth. This issue is not exclusive to the realm of writers but extends to various facets of our lives.

Every one of us possesses distinct talents bestowed by Allah SWT, along with our own reservoir of energy. Imagine a society where each person harnesses their unique talents, perspectives, and aspirations and focuses on personal development instead of critiquing others. Such a shift in mindset could lead to a more functional and harmonious society. If each person redirects the energy spent on conforming to societal expectations toward self-discovery and nurturing their gifts, the results could be transformative, contributing to a rich tapestry of diversity within our society and the flourishing of a multitude of professionals, each bringing a distinct skill set to the table.

Islam places immense importance on knowledge, wisdom, and the pursuit of excellence in all fields, by males and females. From scholars and educators to craftsmen, doctors, and farmers, and even writers, every profession contributes to the holistic development of the Ummah. Embracing diversity and recognising the inherent value each profession brings, requires us to let go of ideologies that stand in contrast to the teachings of Islam. Many of these have crept into our society over time, leading to stagnation and what is commonly referred to as a “brain drain.” It is crucial to critically examine these ideas, identifying those that hinder progress and unity within the Ummah. By letting go of outdated ideologies that impede our collective growth, we pave the way for a resurgence of Islamic values that promote justice and progress.

Revisiting our societal norms through the lens of Islam offers an opportunity to reintegrate progressive Islamic values into our collective consciousness. Encouraging education, innovation, and cooperation across diverse professions aligns with the teachings of Islam and can lead to a reinvigorated Ummah that stands as a beacon of progress and unity. By uplifting and encouraging others, we create a culture of mutual respect and admiration. This shift from a competitive mindset to a collaborative one fosters an environment where diversity is celebrated, and individuals are empowered to reach their full potential.
